What does it mean to take the “silo out of solo”?

You’ll often hear me say that in High Stakes Mastermind Groups we take the “silo out of solo”. But what exactly does that mean? Here’s the thing: it is lonely at the top.

What that means is that when you’re at the top of an organization, whether you have lots of employees or just a few, maybe you’re a solopreneur with no one around but your office cat, you’ll frequently find that you don’t really have anybody that you can talk to. Especially when it’s within your own company. You’re solo – going at it alone. You’re not going to tell your employees your insecurities, that you have doubts, that you’re debating about signing a new contract, or about a choice that you might make with marketing, or a new product, or any number of things that happen in the day-to-day.

There are hundreds of choices that business owners have to make. And there’s an uncomfortable feeling of having to keep up appearances. Typically that of confidence. How can a team leader, or company leader, show their employees and coworkers that they have occasional doubts and insecurities? We are all human, and we all have these emotions from time to time. But there’s a really difficult stigma, when you’re at the top of an organization, to show these vulnerabilities. But here you are; solo, and in a silo.

Tales from a Bad Experience

In High Stakes Mastermind Groups we welcome those vulnerabilities at the times they occur. I had my own personal experience years ago when I was a member of my very first mastermind group. A friend of mine had invited me to be in this group and it was led by one of the members, which in and of itself is the first mistake because I strongly believe that all mastermind group should be led by an outside facilitator that isn’t a part to the actual mastermind itself. But getting back to the story there was a day when I was under tremendous stress and I was feeling extremely emotional as a result of it. During the meeting I vented. I cried and I was emotional. I felt that of all people, these were the ones that would have my back.
Or so I thought. Imagine my shock when three days after that meeting I got a call from the so-called “leader”, who told me that she and the other members had decided that they didn’t want me in the group anymore. I was shocked and deeply, deeply, hurt. The only person who really didn’t support that choice was the same person who had invited me to the group in the first place.

Going Forward

That experience taught me that in my own mastermind groups I will never let that happen to a member. I’ve told all members when they begin a group that I never allow anyone to be abusive to anybody else, but should the day occur where somebody is having particular trouble, and they need the rest of us to support them, we would be there for them. No questions asked. And we’ve had to be there for our members from time to time. But truthfully it doesn’t happen very often. Our meetings are business based. We conduct business and we hold one another accountable to meeting our business goals. We are a group of strong achievers. But even a strong achiever feels like they’re in a silo from time to time. And that is my why to take the “silo out of solo”. What is the Limbic Brain?

The limbic brain is that part of the brain that deals with emotions, memories, instincts, and arousal (stimulation). It is the emotional switchboard of the brain. The limbic system consists subparts like the hippocampus, hypothalamus, and amygdala.  These help in controlling various emotional, endocrine, voluntary and visceral responses to our environments featuring in our daily activities. What a Timer Will Do for You

Do you have a list of “to-dos” and you’re having trouble maintaining your focus so as to get things done? Or maybe you find yourself jumping from one incomplete task to the other or skipping from one project to another. Have you tried setting a timer to help you in accomplishing your list of to-dos?

Well, a timer may just be the solution you need to help you stay focused and get done with, with your list of to-dos.

Most times our excuse for being less efficient is limited time. But the main reason why we’re often less efficient at getting tasks done is that we spend too much time on a single task or project. Setting an alarm could just be the magical solution you need to help you stay focused and spend limited time on a particular task from your list of to-dos. All you have to do is prioritize your tasks and decide how long it will take you to accomplish each of them.

Chances are, you’re most likely going to accomplish the task within the limit you gave yourself. If you were unable finish with that particular task. Or schedule a “meeting” with yourself on your calendar for another working session on that project.

Nothing can motivate you more to be more effective at accomplishing your projects than setting a time limit for yourself.

My timer for this article will soon be up. So, without much ado, below are three reasons why setting a timer is so effective

  1. It gives you speed

Without a timer, you can spend time which would have been enough to accomplish two tasks on accomplishing one only. For instance, I could spend more time developing this piece, but for the fact that the time limit I set for myself is almost up, I need to look for a way to round it up. The implication is that I’m getting this article done at a faster pace than I would have if I had not set an alarm for this task. So, setting a limit for yourself will motivate you to accomplish the task at an incredible speed while resisting distractions.  Since goal accomplishment is the primary objective in High Stakes Mastermind Groups, I not only have to help our members achieve their goals by coaching them to find solutions like this one, I have to model it myself.

  1. Work becomes more like a game challenge

Nobody can say he or she gets tired of playing and winning his or her favorite game. The moment you set a timer to accomplish a particular task, it becomes as though you are playing your favorite game of which your primary goal is to win. Beating the timer you set for a given task is like winning the game in the sense that you feel happy about it.

  1. You Work With More Focus

Setting a timer for 15, 30 or 60 minutes will help you tune out distractions; this is because you know you need to stay focused in order to complete your task before the time runs out. And since you already know what you need to accomplish during that time frame, you won’t waste time trying to multi-task.

Okay, my egg timer just went off, so I think it’s time to wrap up this productivity tip! You should try using a timer today and see how it goes. Personally, I use either a simple egg timer or the timer on my phone. And if there are so many distractions, then put your phone in airplane mode and get to work!  I also don’t allow my email to flag a notification, or make a sound for incoming messages.

So that’s it, now you know how beneficial using a timer can be – it really helps in keeping you organized as you’re able to check off each and every task on your to-do list.

After wracking my brain over and over for just the right way to start this blog I came to terms with the fact that I had a mental roadblock about procrastination. I was procrastinating.  Ironic, right?  After all this is a blog about the price we pay for procrastination.  So here we go –

The great news is that I’ve been getting a lot of attention and inquiries into Mastermind group membership. The interesting part is that several of the people have said that they need to wait until after the summer. But how much is at stake and what price do they pay for not joining when opportunity is available?

First of all, the longer you procrastinate with anything the more you prevent yourself from meeting your goals. When well-meaning people want to get things accomplished before starting membership in a mastermind group, it’s the participation itself that’s going to get their goals accomplished.  So they defeat the purpose! The reality is that you are far less likely to meet your goals because you procrastinated and no one held you accountable.

Having goals and tasks in your Mastermind group isn’t any different from having goals and tasks already for your business.  Except they are clarified, specific, on-target and purposeful.  Not time-consuming fluff.  They are  goals and tasks that your Mastermind group is helping you be accountable for completing.  So time is really not the issue because you will be far more efficient in the time that you spend on getting your goals and tasks accomplished.

All the work that you’ll do is the work that you need to do to grow your business. It’s the work you would be doing anyway just better faster and stronger, more meaningful and more goal-oriented. You will be working on your business not just in it.

Whether it’s a big project you’re working on, like writing a book or landing a defined number of clients, your goal is far more likely to be achieved with the help of the Mastermind group. The power of the group pulls you out of the depths of procrastination and is the best way to move you from mental road-block to action.

So why wait?

Secondly, when you allow yourself to procrastinate it tends to have a rollover effect. You put something off for one day and then becomes easier to put it off for a week. Before you know it you start procrastinating for two weeks and then a month, and it just rolls on from there.

Holding yourself accountable to your goals – and being held accountable by others is a surefire way to make sure that you don’t procrastinate.

Being in a Mastermind group, a good one that is, is a guarantee that the little slip-ups don’t become bigger. It’s your best bet to make sure that you don’t allow yourself to accept the little things that get by and begin to ignore and excuse repeated stalling.

Your Mastermind group members won’t let you. The same is true for your participation in the Mastermind group for them.  They depend on you to make sure that they are held accountable to meeting their goals as well.   It’s a win-win for everybody.

The third way that you pay the price for procrastination is it reflects poorly on you.  If you allow yourself a reputation as somebody who just lets things slip and you keep finding excuses, “Well maybe I’ll just call after lunch” and in the afternoon you think, “Well maybe it’s too late in the day and I’ll call tomorrow morning.” But tomorrow morning you think, “Oh they’re probably just too busy.”  Pretty soon you’ve developed a reputation for being somebody that people won’t want to work with because they can’t trust you to follow through.

My least favorite excuse from people who take overly and unreasonably-long to follow through (or never at all) is “I’m just so busy!”  We’re all busy.  Saying you’re too busy implies that you think no one else is, and that your lack of follow-through won’t adversely affect someone else.  It’s as if you assume they aren’t equally busy.

Remember your Mastermind group is shopping you just as much as you’re shopping them. You could be turned you away for not being dependable. Your group probably wants to keep the space open for somebody who they know they can count on.

In this day of business competition you can’t afford to have a reputation at someone who does not follow through.

Cutting Off Your Nose to Spite Your Face

According to The Grammarist, the idiom to “cut off your nose to spite your face” means you shouldn’t do something out of spite or revenge that will end up causing more harm to you than to the person with which you are angry. In other words, do not let your overreaction lead to self-harm.

I’ve also heard the figure of speech in much “tamer” situations; just causing yourself more harm than good for silly, selfish or even egotistical reasons.

Being too busy hoping to meet your goals, to actually meet your goals in a Mastermind is one of them.  The best way to get beyond procrastination is don’t procrastinate. Stop paying the price. No matter what your nose looks like.
